Axum: Cradle of Civilization

Axum is one of the most ancient cities in Ethiopia and the capital of the most glorious empire of the past.
The Axumite empire flourished 3000 years ago. Its richness can still be pictured on:

The magnificent stelae or obelisks of the 5th century AC
The grave of the 6th century AC kings
The palace and the bath of the legendary queen of Sheba
The cathedral of saint mary of Zion where the original arc of the covenant is said to be kept.

The churches and monasteries of Axum are richly endowed with icons and some of the historical crown of the ancient emperors.
